On Friday, September 25, 2015, I took the DART train from Mockingbird Station to the State Fair of Texas around 6:00 pm. It was the opening day of the fair. The train was not too crowded. I arrived at the fair at 6:30 pm. There was not much of a line. There were six ticket counter windows open. I traded my receipt from Kroger for my season pass. This year, the season pass is checked at the gate, and you do not have to wait in line at the ticket counter for each visit. This is an improvement from past years.
I looked around the gate area and headed for the Truck Zone. I visited with the people at the Ford displays. Then, I went to see this year's Big Tex. He looked smaller than I remembered. He was not speaking at the time that I visited. His new clothing looked great. They erected a misting rest area near Big Tex Circle. The cool water mist was very refreshing. I headed to the area where the Starlight Parade typically starts from each evening in front of the lagoon. I saw the mounted police with a small crowd standing around them. I was surprised that the officers allowed people to pet the horses. They are very large horses.
I saw that the Swan pedal boats have returned to the lagoon area. In the past years that I visited the fair, they had the Chinese Lantern Festival taking up the entire lagoon. I was happy to see the Swan boats going around in the water. Those boats have been there for as long as I have been visiting the fair (so at least since the mid 1980s.) The Starlight parade typically starts out near MLK Blvd. and First Avenue, where it proceeds down First Avenue around the fair. I was able to follow the parade during the daylight to the other side of the fairgrounds, where I also took some evening shots of the floats. Then, I stayed for the Illumination Sensation light show. It was a great opening day experience.
I missed the first train out of the Fair Park Station after the Illumination Sensation at 8:30 pm. It was just too full and crowded. At 9:00 pm, I was already at the Pearl Station switching trains to ride back to where I parked my car. By 9:12 pm, I was safely back in my car at Mockingbird Station.
